About K P Hormis

K P Hormis,born on 18th October 1917 as the second son of Kulangara Poulo-Mariamma couple.His academic studies were as follows:

 

  * 1923 - Started the primary schooling in Govt. School, Mookkannoor.
  * 1927 - Secondary education in St.Joseph's High School, Angamaly.
  * 1931 - Joined S H H S Thevara, Ernakulam for High school Education.
  * 1934 - Joined for Intermediate course in St. Thomas college, Trichur.
  * 1936 - Joined for the two year BA course in St Joseph's College,Trichy.
  * 1940 - Joins Law College, Trivandrum for BL course.

 

              In 1943 he starts practicing as a Lawyer in the Munsif Court, Perumbavoor. He married Ammini from Thattil Family of Trichur. In 1944 Hormis buys shares of Travancore Federal Bank Ltd, a dysfunctional Bank in Nedumpuram near Tiruvalla for Rs.2000 and acquires controlling interest in the Bank. With his able leadership the Authorized capital of the Bank was increased from Rs.5000 to Rs.71000. In 1945 the General body of Travancore  Federal Bank Ltd.,elected K P Hormis as the Managing Director and the Regd office of the Bank was shifted to Alwaye. On 17-08-1945 the first branch of  Federal Bank Ltd. commenced in a 20' x 20' dimension room in Alwaye market (adjacent to St Dominic's church). The second branch of Trav. Federal Bank Ltd., was opened at Angamaly, a nearby town of Mookkannoor on 26-01-1946. In 1947 Travancore Federal Bank Ltd., was renamed as FEDERAL BANK LTD. and opened the 3rd branch at Perumbavoor  on 9-05-1947. On 17-12-1947 opened Ernakulam/North as the 4th branch and the 5th at Chalakudy in 1950.

 

            Hormis was elected to Travancore-Cochin Legislative Assembly in 1954 defeating Malayattoor Ramakrishnan, the renowned writer. In 1964 the following Banks were taken over by Federal Bank: 1.Cochin Union Bank 2. Alleppey Bank. 3. Chalakudy Public Bank. St George Union Bank was taken over in 1965. In 1967 the Marthandom Commercial Bank having 8 branches was amalgamated With Federal Bank. From 1967 the Bank's growth was incomparable and the process of branch expansion was as follows:1969 - 13 branches, 1970- 11, 1971- 17, 1972- 16,1973- 23, 1974- 21, 1975-53,1976- 42, 1977- 45, 1978- 17 and when Hormis was stepping down as Chairman of the Bank on 31-03-1979 had a strength of 285 branches, besides International Banking Dept. and Regional Offices. In 1970 the Bank becomes a Scheduled Commercial Bank and in 1972 the Bank secured license for Authorized Dealer in Foreign Exchange.

             

            He continued to be a Director of the Bank from 1979 to 1984. In 1973 Hormis was elected to the Managing Committee of Indian Banks' Association and he was the President of Kerala Bankers' Chamber for a very long time. He was a well known and well recognized eminent personality all over India and a well known Banker.  He had the opportunity to address a meeting of Chief Executives of Public and Private sector Banks in India convened by the Prime Minister Morarjee Desai in  New Delhi , in which RBI Governor and senior RBI Officials were also presented.

 

            On 22-07-1981 his life partner Ammini passed away due to heart attack and the untimely departure of Ammini affected him mentally and physically. Hormis laid the foundation stone of the present Administrative Building, Federal Towers,Alwaye in 1983. (The present Federal a Towers, Alwaye is situated in the same location of he liquidated Palai Central Bank, which premises was subsequently acquired by Federal Bank to house Alwaye / BJ branch). His favorite game was Table Tennis and he was the President of Table Tennis Association for along time.He had always shown keen interest in maintaining employer-employee relationships and was a sincere well wisher for the employees' welfare.This great man breathed his last on 26th January 1988.Though a resident of Alwaye, he desired to bury the remains of his wife and himself in Mookkannoor.
